Doc of All Trades

Onions have layers, Ogres have layers, and I definitely do, too!

Traditional Western Medicine

After transferring from community college to UC Davis with a degree in Neurobiology, I went to medical school at (The) Ohio State University, with starry dreams of becoming a pediatrician. I had no idea I’d become enthralled with all aspects of medicine: “On Match Day, let me know what specialty you got into,” my wife said, and I laughed when I told her I had matched into both family medicine AND psychiatry (back at UC Davis)!

Since graduating from residency, my primary job has been Core Faculty at Methodist Hospital of Sacramento, Family Medicine Residency Program. I both practice and teach full scope family medicine, including clinic, hospital and nursing home settings. I also provide psychiatric consults, in clinic as well as in the hospital and emergency department. I’m also a therapist (see below!)

The Dry Details:

  • Board Certified in Family Medicine; Degree of Fellow (FAAFP)

  • Board Certified in Psychiatry; Degree of Fellow (FAPA)

  • Combined FM/Psych Residency at UC Davis 2012-2017

  • M.D. degree from OSUCOM June 2012

Therapy Training

During my first two years as an attending physician, I also devoted myself to the training program in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy at the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis. Yes, I am talking about that on-the-couch, tell me about your childhood kind of thing, but it’s more nuanced than that, I swear!

Many forms of talk therapy are focused on the here-and-now, and there’s a lot of value in that. Psychoanalysis is more concerned with what lies underneath, with the idea being that we are going to get to the root causes in order to help you move forward. The main stance is that of non-judgmental curiosity about what’s going on in your life! While I do see patients in therapy up to twice weekly in my main job, I am constantly using these skills to think deeply and with curiosity about any situation I’m tackling.
